Kentucky: Majority of Doctors Renewing Licenses Online

Over the past few months, nearly 65% of Kentucky doctors who have renewed their professional licenses have done so online, according to the State of Kentucky. The new electronic license renewal service was launched in December 2005 and is available at the state's official Web portal.

"This is the first time the Board of Medical Licensure has offered an online license renewal option," said Brenda Knopp, systems manager for the Board. "The response has been very positive and nearly 8,000 doctors have now used the service. We're also planning to incorporate many suggestions from our doctors into enhancements that will be available during the next renewal cycle."

All active medical and osteopathic physicians are eligible to renew their licenses online through April 1. In order to complete a renewal, doctors are asked to verify and update information related to their practices, answer a few qualifying questions, and submit a payment through Kentucky.gov's secure payment server. Payment methods include ACH debit, MasterCard, Visa, Discover, and American Express.

"The majority of physicians who have used this system have reported that they found it to be easy and were very satisfied with the process," continued Knopp. "The Board is excited about this process and hopes to continue to improve it by incorporating some of the suggestions doctors have provided."

The license renewal program was built by the Board of Medical Licensure in partnership with Kentucky.gov.
