Developed by the Land Information Access Association, the map program offers pop-up windows displaying elected officials for each township, including each elected official's name, position, township address, phone number, Web address and e-mail, if available, and includes a place to display a photo of each township hall. MTA gathered such information -- and more -- via a survey conducted on every township in the state.
"While Michigan has nearly 300 townships already online and hosting Web sites, this map feature created by the MTA provides ALL townships in Michigan with a presence on the World Wide Web and a place to access more information about township governments," said MTA Executive Director Larry Merrill. "We believe this interactive mapping software is the first of its kind in the United States."
The goal of the township maps is to gather and display data about a wide range of township services, such as which townships provide fire and police services and whether the township contracts or has its own department. MTA also collected information on which townships provide water and sewer service, administer their own township planning and zoning, and much more.
