Panel on Information Technology and Development to be held in Geneva

Participants will be able to share cutting-edge ideas, experiences, expertise and best practices and establish further cooperation.

A panel discussion aiming to show that information and communication technologies (ICT), when applied strategically, are key to achieve the internationally agreed development goals will convene on 22 May at the United Nations Headquarters in Geneva (Room XIX).

At the event, "ICT for Development -- A follow up to the World Summit on the Information Society," leaders from government, business, non-governmental organizations and academia will take the stage to debate achievements and challenges since the 2005 Tunis World Summit and what lies ahead for the development community.

Four sessions will examine innovative uses of ICT that are helping to achieve individual development goals and targets; ways to stimulate and support ICT innovation in developing countries; ICT innovations that are truly making "value at the bottom of the pyramid"; and partnerships that are making innovative uses of ICT to deliver e-government.

Participants will be able to share cutting-edge ideas, experiences, expertise and best practices and establish further cooperation. The overall goal is to maximize the effectiveness of initiatives and to speed up efforts to meet the international development goals.

Speakers include Sanjiv Ahuja, Chairman of the Board, Orange; Erkki Ormala, Vice-President of Technology and Policy, Nokia; John Gage, Chief Researcher and Vice-President, Sun Microsystems; Juan Rada, Senior Vice-President, Oracle Corporation; Jamaludin Jarjis, Minister of Information and Communication Technology of Malaysia; Montassar Ouaili, Minister for Information Technology of Tunisia; Gaoussou Drabo, Minister of Communication and New Technologies of Mali; Walter Fust, Director-General, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation; Hilary Bowker, Former CNN Anchor; and Liu Chuang, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

?tefan Morávek, Chairperson of the UN Commission on Science and Technology for Development, and Guy Sebban, Secretary-General of the International Chamber of Commerce, will chair the event.

The panel, held in the framework of the tenth session of the UN Commission on Science and Technology for Development, is organized by the Commission and the UN Global Alliance for ICT and Development.
