Pennsylvania Income Tax Deadline One Week Away -- State Offers Evening, Weekend Help

Electronic filing up about 6 percent from last year.

Pennsylvanians have one week to submit state income tax returns and pay any taxes due by the Tuesday, April 17, deadline.

The Department of Revenue's Taxpayer Service & Information Center is prepared to help taxpayers with personal income tax questions by telephone at (717) 787-8201 or through the online customer service center available through the Department's Web site. Service hours have been extended to help people who have not yet filed their returns. The hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, April 14, and 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, April 16, and Tuesday, April 17. The information center will be open during regular business hours, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., today through Friday, April 13.

"With the annual income tax deadline only one week away, we want to be available to help our customers beyond normal business hours," said acting Secretary of Revenue Thomas W. Wolf, who also reminded taxpayers the state personal income tax filing deadline was extended to April 17 to mirror an extension issued by the federal Internal Revenue Service.

Taxpayers can search a database of commonly asked questions, and if they do not find answers to their questions, they can submit questions to a customer service representative via the department's Web site.

The Taxpayer Service & Information Center's staff can also answer questions about electronic tax filing options. The department offers two, free, electronic tax filing options: TeleFile and pa.direct.file over the Internet.

If a taxpayer filed a return last year, his or her Social Security Number and five-digit ZIP Code are all that are needed to file over the telephone with TeleFile. To file using pa.direct.file, taxpayers will need their SSN and one of the following: last year's tax liability; PA driver's license or identification number; or a registered e-signature account with the department. Also available is the PA/IRS e-file service (available through tax preparers or authorized computer software) that allows taxpayers to file state and federal tax returns together or separately.
