The city is implementing AI technology to improve operations including real time security cameras and city run 5g network access for all residents. Brighton officials and partners said the new software will make Brighton a hub for innovation.
“We are introducing this new technology within the city limits of Brighton, which is going to enhance our safety, our ability to be open and transparent with our citizens, and it’s also going to be an opportunity for us to attract more businesses in this area,” Mayor Joseph Edwards said.
The city of Brighton, a small community of about 2,300 residents three miles north of Bessemer in west Jefferson County, is partnering with TheBizio, a software company, on the endeavor.
Edwards said the new software will increase transparency by giving residents access to financial documents and incident reports.
Residents can also use the software to communicate directly with city officials and public safety units.
And the street security cameras will provide real-time interaction with the software to identify weapons and vehicles.
City leadership said this will help to prevent crime before it happens and aid other public safety entities, businesses and residents.
“They’re going to be able to have full visibility of everything that we do here in the city,” Edwards said. “It’s going to create an opportunity for them to be more interactive with us.”
Edwards added that residents can expect work on a new 5g tower to begin in August and a new business hub to support the tech to be built in the future.
“We’ve been passed by for so long, but now they’re going to have a reason to stop by and see what Brighton is all about,” Edwards said.
Brighton City Clerk Mykeshia Myles Jones added that the new security system will work hand in hand with the expansion of its police department.
“The city has had issues with dumping and murders,” Myles Jones said. “With the cameras, I don’t think it’s an infringement on somebody’s privacy. I think it’s helping ensure that we will be able to stop this stuff, because we can really pick up on it right off the bat.”
City leadership said the technology will usher in a new era for Brighton that will draw people into the city.
“This is like the actual real core of innovation being brought to Brighton,” Richard Thompson, CEO of Bizio.
