Geotab to Acquire Public Fleet-Focused BSM Technologies

The joining of two telematics firms will add thousands of government vehicles to Geotab’s customer base and BSM products to its ecosystem. In return, BSM customers get access to Geotab’s tools, marketplace and expertise.

Fleet managers using Geotab, an Ontario-based company with over 1.5 million global subscribers for such services, will be getting a bigger toolkit as the company has announced plans to acquire BSM Technologies.

According to a news release Monday, BSM provides telematics and asset management software to more than 165,000 vehicles in government and private fleets across North America. While BSM has previously used Geotab’s platform as a base on which to build new products, the acquisition will give BSM’s customers access to Geotab’s tools such as those for tracking vehicle performance, driver habits and collisions.

“BSM’s activity in the government space coupled with Geotab’s proven success and commitment to security and scalability will work in tandem to dramatically accelerate Geotab’s presence across North America including in the electric vehicle space, which is an increasingly important emerging market,” said Geotab CEO Neil Cawse in a statement.

BSM customers will also get access to Geotab Marketplace, an online ecosystem of tools for managing assets and workers. In return, BSM will contribute some of its own product and services development in asset tracking, winter ops, third-party integration and off-road equipment tracking.

“Following the announcement of our expanded partnership with Geotab in late 2018, it became clear that BSM’s growing analytics and optimization capabilities combined with Geotab’s best-in-class telematics solution results in an enhanced product offering to fleet management customers,” said BSM President and CEO Louis De Jong in a statement. “As part of the Geotab team we will be able to offer these capabilities across all of Geotab’s partner network.”

The acquisition comes on the heels of two recent accomplishments for Geotab: winning the world’s largest single-source telematics contract in history, to put Geotab tech in 217,000 vehicles for the General Services Administration; and becoming the first telematics company to receive a FIPS 140-2 validation by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, specifically for Geotab’s cryptographic module.
