Remix, a five-year-old startup, has made a name for itself helping government transportation officials redesign streets. Now its founding CEO is stepping down, paving the way for COO Tiffany Chu to lead the company.

Remix, a startup that provides data and collaboration software to public-sector transportation officials, is changing CEOs.

Sam Hashemi, who has served as CEO since Remix's founding five years ago, is stepping down to become a board member and strategic advisor, according to a company blog post. Tiffany Chu, a co-founder and the company's chief operating officer, will become CEO.

Remix makes cloud software that allows government to see how a transportation system works and plan changes to it. For example, one can use drag-and-drop tools to redesign a section of road for bike lanes, or determine how long it would take to get from point A to point B on city buses.

The company has worked with more than 325 cities in 17 countries, according to the blog post. It has a staff of 65 employees and has raised about $27 million from investors.

In his goodbye message, Hashemi didn't give any indication about his plans.

"Now that we’ve reached the five year mark, I’ve been spending some time asking myself: what’s next? One of the hard decisions I’ve made is that this is the right time to pass the baton to a new leader to continue the good work we’ve done," he wrote.

He praised Chu for her understanding of the company's mission, its customers and its workers.

Nichole Jordan will become the company's COO, while Tom Mercer will step in as chief product officer.
