Ashtabula County, Ohio, Considers Software to Cut Workload

Its Board of Commissioners is examining a system that could result in the county being able to reduce its full-time hours. One idea still under discussion is the duration of a potential contract.

(TNS) — The Ashtabula County Board of Commissioners is considering the approval of a new software system that could reduce workload.

Ashtabula County Auditor Scott Yamamoto brought the idea up to the commissioners during a Tuesday work session. He said he had placed the item in next year’s budget, but a pricing break that would save the county money was found if the service was paid for up front on a three-year contract.

Yamamoto said the system would be $75,000 for three years.

Ashtabula County Administrator Janet Discher questioned whether a three-year commitment to a specific new technology would be wise.

Yamamoto said the software has been tried and could possibly lead to a part-time person being hired in place of a full-time worker, if a retirement occurs later this year.

The idea came up as the commissioners, and Discher, have been asking the office to look five years ahead.

“I need you to project five years out,” she said of the planning process for the financial workings of the county.

The commissioners also discussed AI, and how new trends will affect government.

The commissioners heard a request from Ashtabula County Clerk of Courts Chief Deputy Heather Graham.

“We would like to get our security system replaced,” she said. “It’s really just updating equipment.”

The commissioners approved a resolution seeking proposals for the development of a master plan for the Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake.

The commissioners approved the details of a Pelton Road waterline project in Austinburg Township. Fees for five parcel owners were set, detailing their payment of $11,361. Costs were set for three parcels in the area, in case they participate in the future.

The commissioners approved a lease agreement with Northeast Ohio Community Alternative Program (NEOCAP) at a rate of $2,100 annually.
