Tropos Networks and Veraloft have launched Pacifica Net - a citywide Wi-Fi service in Pacifica, California. The network's offerings will focus on providing high-speed fixed and mobile Internet access for residential and business customers, in addition to enabling visitors and tourists to access the Internet for what are described as competitive prices. Pacifica customers can select form three symmetrical speed tiers of service; monthly pricing ranges from $19.95 for up to 1Mbps to $39.95 for up to 3Mbps."The network provides the community with a new high-speed Internet access alternative which is unique in that it can go anywhere a user goes around town. In addition, it modernizes the city's public service infrastructure, increasing mobile worker efficiencies and delivering improved services to the community," said Pacifica's Mayor Pro Tem, James Vreeland.
"The city of Pacifica and its leaders should be commended for recognizing the value of a citywide Wi-Fi network," said Robert Hayes, president of Veraloft. "With thousands of people already using the service in homes, offices, coffee shops and parks, we're seeing validation of what we felt was a uniquely compelling offering -- a true broadband Internet access service that can be used all over town.
To build the network, Veraloft selected the Tropos' 5320 dual-radio MetroMesh router and Tropos Control management suite. The Tropos 5320 dynamically uses both 802.11a and 802.11b/g links in the mesh layer, enabling what the company describes as a network that is "responsive and intelligently adapts to changes in the environment, ensuring accessibility and high-speed performance for a positive, high reliability user experience."
