First Steps Toward Merging E-ZPass Operations of the Delaware River Port Authority and the New Jersey Turnpike Authority

The merger will result in greater customer service and $1.4 million in savings

New Jersey Gov. James E. McGreevey announced on Wednesday the first steps toward merging E-ZPass operations of the Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA) and the New Jersey Turnpike Authority.

At their monthly meeting, DRPA commissioners authorized staff to negotiate an agreement with the New Jersey Turnpike Authority to operate the back-office customer service operations of their E-ZPass system. When completed, the merger of operations will provide DRPA customers with significantly improved customer service and violations processing centers that have been praised by motorists in New Jersey.

Additionally all current 123,500 DRPA customers will have complete online access to their account information to view balance and transactions -- a service not previously available to them.

After the merger is complete, the existing DRPA customer service walk-in facility, conveniently located on the Camden side of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, will remain in place and be available to both NJ and DRPA E-ZPass customers. This will provide a third regionally located customer service facility in New Jersey.

"E-ZPass has come a long way in the past year," said McGreevey. "Now the improvements that have attracted 160,000 new customers because of its reliable and convenient service in New Jersey can now also be offered to the E-ZPass account holders of the DRPA -- along with significant savings."

ACS State & Local Solutions operates both the DRPA and New Jersey systems. Turnpike officials asked ACS to renegotiate specific costs relating to operations and transactions in the DRPA contract, which will result in $1.4 million in savings. The New Jersey E-ZPass system will not incur any additional costs as a result of the addition of the DRPA accounts.

The New Jersey Turnpike Authority Board of Commissioners will vote on the addition of the DRPA E-ZPass customers at their meeting on March 30. Complete integration of the two systems is expected to take place this summer.
