New Washable Mouse Provides Added Safety for America's Dental Offices

Mouse offers 2.4GHz wireless freedom combined with protection against spread of bacterial infection.

The nation's 162,181 professionally active private dental practitioners -- that number based on 2004 figures from the American Dental Association -- now have a new ally in mitigating the spread of infection, one that also allows professionals to easily move from one operatory to another and throughout the office: Unotron's new washable, 2.4GHz wireless, 3-button mouse with removable scroll wheel which works up to 26.25 feet (8 meters) away from the PC.

Unotron, (www.unotron.com), the leading manufacturer and worldwide marketer of high quality, washable data input and security devices, has introduced its patented technology -- Unotron WM10 ScrollSeal Washable Optical Mouse -- which is SpillSeal protected, to IP66 and NEMA 4X standards. The mouse is an ideal companion to Unotron's washable wireless computer keyboards, also affordably priced for dental offices.

"Dentists and their staff members need freedom to move around the office, from diagnostics and treatment operatories to billing, claims processing and administrative areas," says Unotron director Joseph Carabello. "Thousands of dentists throughout the country already rely upon Unotron's washable wireless computer keyboards as a safety measure against the spread of infection. Now, they have this revolutionary wireless mouse which is designed to eliminate cable clutter and allow dentists to work at long range with no interference."

Carabello explains that this is the first washable mouse to incorporate a removable scroll wheel, featuring smooth optical tracking and ergonomic design that is comfortable and easy to use. Standard button switch pressure enhances user friendliness and positions the technology for all computer skill sets.

"SpillSeal washable computer keyboards and mice are an important step forward in dental hygiene, enabling professionals to clean and disinfect in-office equipment that may be breeding grounds of bacteria and viruses," says Carabello.

Carabello points out that during dental or surgical procedures, bacteria which reside in the mouth or upper respiratory tract can travel to the in-office keyboard and survive as long as 24 hours. Viruses can live on the keyboards for at least one hour or longer, depending upon the moisture in the air and the temperature of the room.

Unotron's SpillSeal technology can be disinfected and cleaned under running water without damaging the keyboard or mice, finally allowing dental offices to perfectly balance function and the demands of infection control. They can be immersed in commercial grade detergents or antibacterial solutions and rinsed under tap water, without damaging the product or impacting functionality.

"Dentists and dental assistants adhere to strict standards for equipment sterilization and hand hygiene as an imperative for infection control, but may not realize that germs are being transmitted to the computer keyboard, either airborne or via a gloved hand that touches the keys," he adds. "To mitigate infection, some dentists report discarding existing operatory keyboards every three months. That practice could prove quite costly."

According to Daniel Le Pera, DDS, Hackensack, New Jersey, "Prior to the introduction of the SpillSeal keyboard, we had to use a barrier, and at the end of day, we would have to take all the keys off and wash it that way. Now, we can wash and rinse not only the entire keyboard but also the wireless mouse."
