Youngstown, Ohio Police Deploy BIO-key Powered Laptops in Patrol Cars

Select solution, MobileCop, is now used by more than 100 Ohio police departments.

BIO-key International, Inc., a leader in finger-based biometric identification and wireless public safety solutions today announced the award of a new contract with the Youngstown, Ohio Police Department for the deployment of BIO-key's MobileCop software. The deployment of MobileCop on laptops in patrol vehicles will provide Youngstown's police officers access to the Ohio Law Enforcement Automated Data System (LEADS), the Ohio Local Law Enforcement Information Sharing Network (OLLEISN) and federal data sources for information on vehicles, drivers and persons of interest. MobileCop has already proven to be a valuable aid in the City's Special Interdiction Patrols program. Together with county and state law enforcement agencies, the Youngstown Police Department has initiated a proactive "zero tolerance" crime and gang violence prevention program. As a result, at traffic stops or at scenes of suspicious activity, officers can use MobileCop to directly link to LEADS, OLLEISN and federal databases to flag stolen vehicles and guns, outstanding arrest warrants, and suspended driver's licenses, as well as alerts posted by other Ohio law enforcement agencies.

Youngstown Police Chief, Jimmy Hughes, noted, "With MobileCop, our patrol officers on the street get the information they need on vehicles, drivers, and persons of interest quickly and without dispatcher intervention. That protects officer safety by identifying potentially dangerous situations and improves law enforcement by helping the officer make the right decision on issuing a citation or arresting an individual before they leave the scene."

"We're very pleased to have Youngstown join more than one hundred police departments in Ohio and the thousands of law enforcement professionals across the U.S. using MobileCop to improve officer and public safety," said Ken Souza, vice president and general manager of BIO-key's Law Enforcement Division. "We believe that BIO-key is well positioned to benefit from a growing need for first responders to deploy efficient and easy-to-use mobile data solutions."
