Airspan Networks Announces Availability of Its High Performance HiperMAX WiMAX Base Station

HiperMAX, with industry's only true software defined radio, enables simultaneous deployment of OFDM Fixed and OFDMA 16e Mobile WiMAX services.

Airspan Networks, Inc., provider of both WiMAX and Wi-Fi based broadband wireless access networks, today announced the general availability and successful commercial deployment of its "16e-ready" HiperMAX Base Station.

In the fourth quarter 2006 and the first quarter 2007, Airspan successfully shipped its HiperMAX Base station to over 10 carriers in four continents, including commercial deployment with two major European tier 1 carriers, with multiple proprieties in South America and the Mediterranean, respectively.

Eric Stonestrom, CEO and president of Airspan Networks, commented, "We are very pleased by the strong market traction we have achieved with our HiperMAX Base Station. HiperMAX has been selected by tier 1 industry carriers because of its future-proof design, class leading operational range and lowest cost per Bit/Hz/Sec of delivered broadband capacity. Over 170 sectors have been provided in the 3.5 GHz band in the first few months of 2007, a formidable launch for the product."

HiperMAX, which features the industry's only true software defined radio (SDR), enables carriers to simultaneously deploy OFDM Fixed and OFDMA 16e Mobile WiMAX services from the same platform. HiperMAX supports the simultaneous deployment of FDD and TDD WiMAX using a unique co-existence operating mode that ensures the effective use of edge frequencies, which are typically wasted by TDD-only platforms. HiperMAX also supports advanced multiple antenna transmit and receive diversity (including Space Time Coding) for Fixed WiMAX and both Matrix A and Matrix B MIMO (Multiple-in and Multiple-out) for "Wave 2" 16e Mobile WiMAX.

Paul Senior, vice president of marketing and product management at Airspan Networks, added, "HiperMAX allows our carrier customers to combine the strengths of today's Fixed WiMAX, which is ideal for Ethernet based layer 2 'DSL-like' deployment using indoor and outdoor modems, with high performance MIMO based 16e Mobile WiMAX, which is optimized for providing broadband services to embedded WiMAX radios in Laptops, PDAs and Handsets, or Mobile WiMAX connectivity provided by add-in cards or USB devices. By combining the best of both worlds, carriers can significantly improve the robustness of their business case, offering multiple services to a range of customer types."
