Cisco, Trapeze, Aruba and Bluesocket Lead In Wireless LAN Security

Cisco has by far the most ambitious security vision for wireless LANs according to ABI Research.

According to a new ABI Research study and its accompanying ABI Vendor Matrix, wireless LAN vendors are filling key security gaps with proprietary solutions that are becoming check-off items for enterprise buyers unwilling to wait for key standards to be finalized in areas such as roaming, load balancing and management. Enterprises also now expect tightly integrated intrusion detection and site planning functionality.

ABI vice president and research director Stan Schatt says, "In our ABI Vendor Matrix evaluation, Cisco has by far the most ambitious security vision for wireless LANs, and scores highest on the Innovation axis, followed by Bluesocket. Trapeze and Aruba score highest on the Implementation axis, measuring actual security in their products. There's a significant gap between these contenders and other pretenders. The real dark horse in this race could be Hewlett-Packard with its Identity Driven Network approach."

The ABI Vendor Matrix developed as a supplement to this report provides a clear understanding of vendors' positions in this market. Vendors are assessed on the important parameters of "innovation" and "implementation." Among the key criteria analyzed are authentication, end-point security, management, site planning, vision, availability, partnerships, certifications, intrusion detection, product integration and pricing.

The new study, Who Leads in WLAN Security? examines the significant security gaps not covered by IEEE 802.11i and reveals how vendors are differentiating their products based on enhanced proprietary security features. The report stresses the importance of partners in filling such gaps, and assesses how successful or unsuccessful vendors have been in tightly integrating these critical security features. It is the most comprehensive study of what is often the key WLAN buying criterion for many enterprise customers.

This research report forms part of ABI Research's Wi-Fi Research Service, which includes Research Reports, Research Briefs, Market Data, Online Databases, the ABI Vendor Matrix, ABI Insights, and analyst inquiry support.
