Federal Strategic Sourcing Initiative to Cut Wireless Costs for Federal Agencies

Studies have found that government agencies generally lack a centralized means of managing wireless device expenditures.

Avalon Technology, Inc. today announced it is one of three vendors chosen by the General Services Administration (GSA) to streamline the procurement and management of wireless devices and services used by the Federal government. The $93 Million contract, awarded January 14th, is part of the Federal Strategic Sourcing Initiative (FSSI) for Telecommunications Expense Management (TEM). Under the contract, 13 participating Federal agencies may purchase comprehensive TEM services from Avalon. Contract terms are two years with three one-year options.

Reported studies have found that government agencies generally lack a centralized means of managing wireless device expenditures. Under the GSA contract, Avalon will reorganize the Federal agencies' processes and reduce wireless expenditures through inventory assessment, service-plan evaluation & consolidation, maintenance & support, and security-policy enforcement.

Irving Rodrigues, president and CTO of Avalon, commented, "As an industry leader in mobile computing and communications, our experience shows that an agency lacking a Telecom Expense Management program may be losing millions of dollars on an annual basis. Avalon is pleased to take this opportunity to optimize the efficiency of wireless utilization and save money for both the government and the American taxpayer."

Federal Acquisition Service Commissioner James A. Williams affirmed in a press release regarding the GSA FSSI TEM award, the "procurement process and resulting sourcing initiatives are bringing industry best practices to the government, providing taxpayers with the best value for their money."

TEM programs within the Federal sector have proven to save agencies anywhere from 25% to 40% on annual wireless bills - as accomplished by Avalon's programs at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), Department of Justice (DOJ) and U.S. Army Materiel Command (AMC).
