Hyperia Launches WiMAX in Port Harcourt, Nigeria

Businesses and consumers in "Oil City" get high speed wireless broadband.

Hyperia has launched Port Harcourt's first portable broadband wireless access network, using Mobile WiMAX 802.16e equipment from Navini Networks.

Hyperia's deployment in the 3.5 GHz band, is significant as it covers Port Harcourt (aka 'Oil City'), a major petrochemical and business area that has a high concentration of expatriates and multinational businesses.

To move the Internet business into the future Hyperia has now joined up with Navini for its mobile WiMAX technology. The Managing Director, Mr. Sandeep Jayaswal says, "We are proud to be the pioneers of the Internet business in Nigeria."

"Cheap, fast, reliable, portable Internet ... delivered wirelessly, with Non Line of Sight (NLOS) and no truck rolls -- what's not to like?" added Sandeep Jayaswal. "The business and mass market sectors here have been waiting for this kind of solution."

"Navini has the most experience and the most subscribers of pre-mobile WiMAX deployments in the world," said Roger Dorf, president and chief executive officer of Navini Networks. "We are pleased to provide Hyperia with the products and technology to launch this cost effective service and acquire a strong subscriber base. Of course, Navini's Ripwave(R) has a seamless upgrade path to 802.16e so Hyperia's network is 'future-proofed'."

"Our initial deployment spans Port Harcourt in the Rivers State then our intent is to expand nationwide," added Jayaswal. "We would want to take the Internet to the masses with this affordable solution. I would want every person who has a PC to have high speed wireless Internet."

Hyperia is a leading Nigerian ISP involved in providing Internet access via VSAT, Wireless Access -- 3.5 GHZ (available in Port Harcourt), dial-up, domain and e-mail hosting and other value added services.

In its efforts to sustain the best quality of service to its customers, Hyperia has recently launched its own Independent Satellite HUB in London which connects to several satellites having their footprint concentrated over Africa and Europe thereby providing customers in these territories with a direct connection through the London hub to the major worldwide first class carriers for data, voice and internet via fiber.
