Paris Wi-Fi Municipal Network Moves Forward

Free wireless access for city of Paris residents and visitors as access points are rolled out.

Colubris Networks has been selected by Alcatel-Lucent and SFR, a major French telecom operator, to provide Wi-Fi equipment for the "Paris Wi-Fi" project. The project is the largest municipal Wi-Fi network in Europe, offering Internet access to the greatest number of Parisians and tourists using Wi-Fi technologies. As part of the Paris Digital City (PARVI) program, aimed at boosting the New Information and Communication Technologies adoption and supporting local technological initiatives, the City of Paris, like many other leading local communities in the world, decided to set up its own ubiquitous public Wi-Fi network, called Paris Wi-Fi. The Alcatel-Lucent and SFR consortium selected for the project by the City of Paris has designed and implemented an indoor and outdoor Wi-Fi coverage solution for municipal areas, including parks, squares, town halls, libraries and museums. From July 16th, Parisians and visitors have enjoyed free wireless high speed Internet access services thanks to Colubris access points distributed throughout 100 city sites. As of September 29th, when Paris Wi-Fi was officially launched, 225 public sites were covered, serviced by 315 access points. Full coverage of the 260 municipal areas (400 APs) is expected by the end of October.

The Paris project falls on the heels of Colubris' public Wi-Fi deployments covering the City of Luzern, Switzerland and Singapore.

"Being associated with an ambitious and innovative project such as Paris Wi-Fi is particularly rewarding and it serves as real recognition of the technical capacity and operational benefits of our solution," said Rob Scott, president and CEO, Colubris Networks. "We have been involved in many municipal Wi-Fi hotzones, and each one had unique requirements that we were able to address thanks to the flexibility and scalability of our solution. An increasing number of municipal authorities are planning, evaluating and deploying wireless networks, which is very exciting for Colubris."
