The equipment installation will allow the Airport and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to deploy personnel more effectively and better ensure the safety and security of flights leaving Tallahassee. The $1.7 million improvement project is being funded by a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grant and Airport funds.
Construction on the checkpoint improvements is scheduled to start July 2, and will take approximately 90 days to complete. During the construction, only one checkpoint lane will be open. Travelers are asked to arrive early for their flights to allow extra time for the security screening process. During peak periods, additional Airport staff will be present to assist passengers with special needs.
"Controlling access to the secure part of the Terminal is a significant part of ensuring the safety of flights leaving Tallahassee," said Kenneth M. Austin, Director of Aviation. "This checkpoint enhancement provides a method for ensuring that this area of the terminal remains secure."
The Tallahassee Regional Airport is operated and maintained by the City of Tallahassee. Over 90 flights daily include nonstop service to Atlanta, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Houston, and Memphis, along with a number of key Florida cities.
