Anchorage Code Enforcement Goes Online

Web access allows citizens to electronically file, track complaints.

Citizens can now file and track code enforcement complaints instantly as the Municipality of Anchorage (MOA), Alaska, has launched a new state-of-the-art code enforcement system.

The Hansen Code Enforcement System allows the public to enter a complaint online using the MOA's Web site. Users will receive an e-mail notification of the filed complaint, any change in the status of the complaint, and can track their complaint at any time. A field reporting component of the system allows enforcement officers in the field to instantly receive, send and record data via a wireless connection, which will allow for immediate processing of a report of a violation.

"This new system is a major milestone in transforming how code enforcement activity is managed between city departments," said Mayor Mark Begich. "With Hansen's new Web interface, citizens will have 24-hour access to submit and track code violations."

Begich added the new system is the next step in taking the city to the cutting-edge of citizen services. It provides municipal staff new technology that can deliver more accurate, timely and cost-effective services to citizens.

When citizens file a complaint on the Hansen system, they will be asked to choose from eight areas under which to file the alleged code violation. If the wrong department is entered, municipal staff will automatically route the complaint to the correct department.

Approved by the Anchorage Assembly at the end of 2005, the launch of the system purchased from Hansen Information Technologies is the result of more than a year's worth of work involving more than 50 staff members from the Information Technology Department and eight code enforcement areas. The groups teamed up to complete an initial analysis, application development, training and weeks of testing.
