911: Call If You Can, Text If You Can't

A new pilot running in Portland, OR

At a conference I attended recently it was announced that a pilot 911 program would start running in Portland, Ore. The theme or message is, "Call if you can, Text if you can't," which I like!

Texting 911 is part of next-generation 911. I'm betting many people think they can text 911 already where they live. Over time, as the next generation of leaders emerge and millennials are integrated more into the workforce, I think you will find that a voice call to 911 will go the way of the dinosaurs. This won't happen right away -- but, in 10-20 years our digital connections will be stronger than our voice connections are today.

This issue of texting 911 is a great example of our challenge in keeping up with technological change. For instance, people will expect you to show up with a tablet computer to collect damage information. They will be impatient with any paper-driven process.
