Food Critic

Actually I have low standards when it comes to food. If you want an emergency manager with "good taste" when it comes to food you should talk with Carmen Merlo, Director, Portland Emergency Management.

The taste test that I just finished was for "Heater Meals" which was a vendor at the NEMA Conference. I picked up one meal for a taste test.

The meal I tried was "Homestyle Chicken & Noodles in Gravy." It was "OK." Pretty tasteless really. I dumped in the "Papa's Perfect Seasoning" mix that came with it, plus the pepper packet to jazz it up a little bit. Kids would probably be fine with it. It wasn't all gravy!

So why would you get these meals in the first place. There are two reasons. Storage life, 2-5 years depending on the meal type you buy, and the chemical heater pack that is activated by adding two ounces of water, i.e., warm food. I've eaten cold food out of a can for weeks (Army C Rations) and a warm anything tastes pretty good. It only takes 10 minutes to warm something up and you don't have to be outside to do it.

They have evidently shipped millions of meals recently to respond to the hurricanes that have impacted/about to impact the Southern Coast of the United States.

They come in cartons of 12. The most expensive ones run around $85.80, or $7.15 a meal.

I do most everything around the house except make dinner. Now with "Heater Meals" my wife will be thrilled (?) to know that I can fix a quick dinner! Disaster or no disaster.
