IP Addresses and TV Channels

I'm beginning to understand what is going on.

It now seems like a long time ago that I remember reading or hearing that there would be hundreds of TV channels.  At the time I was thinking--"How is that possible?"  What could possibly be covered by so many televisions shows that people would want to watch?  Well, duh!  You know the answer to that question already...reality TV and every type of self-help, home remodeling, gardening, cooking, selling. sharks, etc. show you might want with more to come.  I'm sure an all Elvis channel on TV is just around the corner.

Which brings me to IP addresses.  In the very near future every electronic device you own will have an IP address.  Refrigerators, coffee makers, the furnace, lighting and entertainment systems and automobiles.

This last one has the connection to emergency management.  Just as smart phones are becoming the warning system of the 21st century, cars will be part of the mix.  Not because of the radio, but because they will be connected to the Internet.  We have had computers in our cars for years.  Mostly these have been used to help diagnose engine and other mechanical issues.  Now your auto will be like your PC connected to the Internet and will allow you to remain connected when driving.  I don't know if you will be able to Tweet or do Facebook while driving, but I would not be surprised if those services are enabled when the car is in park.  Apps will be a major part of this IP integration into the auto.

In the not too distant future we'll be able to contact people while they are driving and perhaps not only warn them, but provide a map that directs them away from danger.  All of this is coming soon to a showroom near you!
