Iowa Dam Break--The Saga Continues

The Iowa dam failure that I reported on earlier is not over. The story will continue for some time to come. As reported in the Des Moines Register there are many unresolved issues:

  • The "community" that grew up around the dam/lake didn't want to incorporate because of fear of government interference in their lives, more taxes, etc.
  • Now of course--they want to continue to "own the dam" but get government money for a bailout of the fixes needed to replace the structure that failed.
Hmm, sounds familiar right? People want their cake and eat it too. All the benefits, but none of the obligations. Hey, this is Iowa. Don't people in the Midwest have those "responsibility values" that we always hear about?

I loved the this quote from one anti-tax person, "It isn't the obligation of taxpayers to alleviate risk from our society," Failor said. "By having private ownership of that dam, they assumed risk. People made a decision to live in a privately owned resort community. They should get their checkbooks out and take care of it."

It of course will be interesting to see how the politicians react once they get the squeeze put on them by interested parties.
