Here are some piracy statistics for you:

60% of the wold oil is transported by sea
200% increase in piracy acts off Somali and in Gulf of Aden (but not all incidents are reported)
10 vessels are being held for ransom (January 2009)
In 2008, worldwide: 49 vessels hijacked, 890 crew taken hostage, 32 injured, 11 killed, 21 presumed dead, 46 vessels fired on
