An Advent Season — Waiting for the New Virus Strain to Arrive

Seventy percent more transmissible, but hopefully not more deadly.

In recent days, the United Kingdom has announced that they identified a much more contagious version of the coronavirus. At present, it does not appear to be more deadly, nor do the experts think that the current vaccines being produced won't work against it.

The real challenge is that the new strain of the virus appears to be 70 percent more transmissible — spreading the disease faster wherever it goes. Already in Britain it has caused the government to shut down all but the most essential of activities until Dec. 30. Another article I read on the impact is that it is snarling the movement of goods between England and the continent and European Union trading partners.

It is not a question of if, but when this version of the virus will come to the United States. Thus, we are in the season of "Virus Advent" — not exactly the Advent we were hoping to be in at this time of year. When it does arrive, it will not be a time of celebration. Rather, it will mean another uptick in cases, then hospitalizations and finally, more deaths.

For most Americans, the first half of 2021 will be the "Vaccine Advent Season" with us waiting our turn to get vaccinated. That day cannot come soon enough!
