- What's my schedule for the day?
- What work projects do I need to accomplish?
- What can I blog on?
- What's for dinner (my wife's favorite!)
- What needs to be done in the garden?
To have something to do that was not "work focused" I took up gardening — which kept me at home. My grandfather was a gardener and my first paying jobs as a kid were mowing lawns and doing yard work in the neighborhood. When we finally owned a home I became a lawn nut with the greenest and thickest grass in Sparta, Wis. I had to mow it every four days, otherwise I could not get my mower to cut it.
With our move to Puyallup, Wash., where we are "homesteading" for 28 years I made it my mission to have a yard that has all the features I can put into the smallish space that it is. My goal was to have this big flat piece of sunny property to work with. As it normally is, I ended up with the right house, but on a lot with little sun and slopes in front and back. I'm still thinking about that waterfall!!
My wife Mary calls herself a "yard widow," since that is where you will find me when I'm not on the computer at home. You know I love what drones can do so I was able to have my yard flown and photographed by a drone. Yes, it can be a lot of work, but thought I'd share it with you here.
No matter what you do in the field of emergency management, you too need an outlet for your service or creativity. But, I can tell you, I'm done building garden walls. My back won't take it anymore.
