Apple's iOS 11 Enables Augmented Reality

How will you incorporate AR into your program?

Another "game changer" in the technology world is augmented reality (AR). Just think Pokemon Go.I'm not one to play any of these games, but I am looking for how the technology can be applied to emergency management. With Apple enabling AR in their new edition of iOS 11, many more applications can be developed and it will allow people like "you" to use these tools in your emergency management functions. I'm thinking specifically of training and exercises.

It may be crude at first, but maybe one of your staff is up to the task and has the technical skills to make it happen. Just remember my advice from an earlier blog post, Recognizing Creativity and New Ideas. Watch the video at the link below. It give you a very rough idea of how a "desktop" exercise can be done differently in an AR world.

See this news from one vendor:

Thyng LLC (http://thyng.com/) this week announced the launch of Thyng 4.0 with ARKit, a quick and easy all-purpose augmented reality (AR) authoring app for anyone with an Apple iOS 11 iPhone or iPad.

What's super cool about Thyng 4.0 powered by ARKit is that users for the first time ever can bring any surface in the world to life with amazing augmented reality experiences using their own photo and video content selected directly from their iPhone or iPad photo albums.

While a number of AR apps for Apple iOS 11 have been announced since ARKit and iOS 11 became available two weeks ago, Thyng is the only ARKit app that allows for general-purpose AR authoring, using one's own videos and photos. In short, it's a fun and easy way to get started with AR experience authoring.

As background, Thyng 4.0 is built on Thyng’s highly scalable, cloud-based AR platform, which supports both commercial applications of AR and exploration by consumers who want to build their own DIY AR experiences for fun. It's part of a much larger vision for the future of AR.

I encourage you to download the Thyng app and try it for yourself.

You can see some sample videos that show Thyng 4.0 in action, and find a link to get it from the Apple store here: http://thyng.com/arkit/
