Boat Evacuation of New York on 9/11

This is a great example of how improvisation during disasters can work well.

For some reason I had never seen this YouTube Video of the Boat Evacuation of New York City immediately following the terrorist attacks of 9/11.  It is definitely worth watching.

It is an example of everyday people coming to the rescue of other others.  I say it is the model for the future.  We need to do more to incorporate the capabilities of the average citizen and their resources in our efforts.  I think that if you had asked a lawyer if this was a "good idea" he or she would have pointed out all the risks to the passengers, boats and spontaneous volunteers.  It would never have happened!

Instead, a call came out from the Coast Guard and everyone in radio range responded--because they wanted to help.  Today I think the call would have gone out via social media.

Whoever said New Yorkers are not friendly--has not seen this video.
