COVID-19: Wuhan Resumes Life -- But Not Like It Was

Give up on going back to what it was like before. We will have a new normal.

See this NY Times article about "the new normal" that isn't normal in Wuhan. While the setting is different and their experiences more like NYC, there does appear to be a difference to "the future," and restarting everything and going right back to where they were before the coronavirus is unlikely.

China Ends Wuhan Lockdown, but Normal Life Is a Distant Dream

The United States will also have a "new normal" when we come out of this pandemic that grips the nation today. In each state and community, it will likely be a bit different, based on the experiences of individuals, businesses and governments.

At the Pacific Northwest Economic Region (PNWER), the wheels are turning on how this new future will look. State and local governments will have their budgets decimated because of the lack of business activity that leads to lower tax receipts. How do we bring tourism back? When will people feel safe to travel? Is the cruise season in Seattle that should be humming along right now even happening in 2020?

And travel, is only one aspect of the Northwest's economy. Energy, wood products, invasive species, water, the list goes on. What new programs will be needed and what old ones need to be put on hold? Where is the best return on investment in restarting economic activity?

These are the types of things that PNWER hopes to help states and local jurisdictions with.
