Crisis Mapping Explained

I picked up a link to a PowerPoint Introducing Crisis Mapping: An interdisciplinary new field from a Twitter posting.  What I like about it is that it contains several elements.  This includes the "why?" and also the "what" and the "how."  

 

I think many emergency managers have not delved into this world because they don't have the personal skills to do so--neither do I!  That is why the title of the presentation is so very important.  To leverage the power of social media and crisis mapping requires an interdisciplinary approach that brings different skills together to come up with a solution that works for an organization.

 

You might not be mapping conflicts in Africa, but you can map out and understand the issues of your town or county.  Leveraging support from social networks will give you situational awareness and allow you to "understand" and then "respond."

 

So, start putting your team together; IT, GIS, volunteers, other regional partners, the private sector, the Red Cross...
