Disaster Zone Podcast: How to Work With a Legislator

Everyone has the right and ability to contact their legislators.

I have never been shy about approaching any legislator about the needs of emergency management. I have to say the majority listen politely and then go on their way with a, "Thanks for sharing" message back at me.

One who I developed an ongoing relationship with over the years is Jim Kastama. I recently completed an interview with him for the Disaster Zone Podcast, "How to Work with a Legislator." Jim has many years of experience as a Washington state legislator, first in the House and then in the Senate, including being a committee chairman.

Today he serves as a city councilmember for the city of Puyallup, Wash. We discuss how to approach a legislator with draft legislation and what works or doesn’t work to get a bill actually passed during legislative sessions.

If you have thought about it, but have not taken the first step towards becoming legislatively active, this podcast might help "jumpstart" you towards making a personal difference. Use the tips Jim shared and leap into the ring!
