Economic Impact of COVID on States Is Uneven

Just as the impact to families is not the same, some struggle and some thrive.

If you were able to shift your workplace to home and continue your income stream, then the pandemic's impact to you and your economic welfare has likely been minimal. However, if you work in the entertainment or service industry, you are likely to be struggling to pay rent and other bills. The pandemic recession has hit specific sectors of our economy very hard and left others almost unscathed.

This is generally the message in this article from Governing: "Absent Federal Aid, How Bad Are State Budgets?"

Some states are faring pretty well and others are struggling, especially those dependent upon the service economy, tourism, and the oil industry.

The latest federal budget includes $900 million for COVID-19 relief, but none of those dollars are earmarked for states or local communities.

Another aspect of the economy is reflected in the fact that 2020 added more billionaires to the $100 billion club. More concentration of wealth at the top and little trickle-down impact to the workers.
