Obama Issues Executive Order for Establishing a Federal Flood Risk Management Standard

Change is coming to flood mitigation.

At long last there's progress on climate adaptation. Check out the president's Executive Order for establishing a federal flood risk management standard and a process for further soliciting and considering stakeholder input.

There is also a fact sheet that explains the basics. The bottom line is that you don't have to just put the infrastructure or building back to the way it was, you can actually improve the disaster resilience of the infrastructure to meet expected changes due to a warming climate. This is really huge!

I remember the days of fighting with FEMA to try and make a culvert bigger to handle increased flows and it pushing back on the idea. Common sense does occasionally win out.
