Failing Infrastructure: Who Cares?

When people know about a problem and fail to fix it, we are planning to fail.

While people might argue about climate change and what is causing it, everyone agrees that America's critical infrastructure is falling apart. See this 60 Minutes segment that lays it all out clearly, especially about our roads and bridges.

The show also documents why there are no solutions. Our elected officials are afraid to act. They care more about getting re-elected than they do about fixing a known problem. The solution is more funding for infrastructure. Where will that money come from? Out of our pockets, yours and mine, in the form of taxes. Yes, there are no free lunches and there are no free roads and bridges.

I don't know what it will take to get elected officials to act. One single bridge failing won't do it. Maybe if one of their own was killed when a bridge collapsed, they might take a personal interest in finding a solution.

I worry about our nation. We are like many people and institutions who know what to do, but don't have the courage to be proactive in solving the problem. Until our elected officials wake up we'll continue to use the tried and true "fix on failure" method of operating.
