FirstNet: Breaking News on Lawsuit

FirstNet contracting will be able to move forward.

Action on the awarding of a contract to the winning bidder to provide FirstNet services to the entire United States has passed a major milestone. There was a legal challenge to the pending award and the action went into federal court. Today there was this FirstNet announcement on the court ruling:

"We are pleased share that the U.S. Court of Federal Claims has ruled in favor of FirstNet in the protest action. This is a positive development for public safety’s network.  As we said we would, FirstNet has continued to work on the procurement up to the point of an award. We are ready to move forward on the necessary steps to finalize the contract for the nationwide public safety broadband network. Among the next steps will include a special FirstNet board meeting. We will provide the details for the meeting as they become available."

This means that the FirstNet contract award will go forward. Each state will have an opportunity to review a state-by-state communications plan before they are finalized. I'm sure more information will be forthcoming, perhaps as earliest as next week. It has been reported in the popular press that AT&T Wireless was the successful bidder but, not formally announced.

At this point I am guessing it will be sometime in 2018 before agencies and organizations can access the new system.
