Fugate on Communications as a Challenge

I was sent this opinion piece, Craig Fugate: Emergency communications will be the next challenge of COVID-19.

Which prompted me to finally remember a name I could not recall when speaking to someone earlier in the week, General Norman Schwarzkopf. I finally recalled his name because Craig and 'Stormin Norman' had some similar personality traits.

One of the things I appreciate about Craig is his leadership on technology. As FEMA administrator, he was way out in front on the use of social media by emergency management. Too bad he could not convince more agencies at the state and local levels to use it when he was the head of FEMA.

I agree totally with his brief assessment about how volunteers are a force multiplier who are ignored more than they are used.

One item in his piece he did not point out, when talking about interoperable communications, is the fact that it is not an equipment problem -- it is a people problem.

Rodney King said it right, "Why can't we all just get along?" We choose not to communicate with others!
