How Long Will We Have to Wear Masks?

Longer than you think.

We have a terrible habit in the United States of looking for, wishing for and then hoping we've found the "silver bullet" that solves all our problems. For the current coronavirus pandemic that silver bullet is a vaccine. It appears that the miracle drug is "right around the corner" and all our troubles will be over soon. That is the way it feels for many people — I am sure of it!

But we won't have enough people vaccinated until well into 2021 before we can let our guard down. I can see a huge issue coming as people, after getting the vaccine, decide they don't need to wear a mask. Then, in places where mask wearing has become a socially accepted norm, people will stop wearing them. Even those who have not had the vaccine.

There has never been another time in my lifetime when consistent, national public health messaging needs to be ramped up and put forward and sustained for many more months to come. My hope is that by Thanksgiving next year everyone can have a "normal" holiday season.

I just see a big task ahead.

One other prediction, more on the positive side of things. I do think that wearing a mask in public, especially when commuting on mass transit, may become more of a norm in the future for urban areas. This would be similar to what we saw before the pandemic in Asian countries.
