The 1993 flooding was a 500-Year Flood. This event will more than match that flooding on the lower Mississippi River.
Human Causes of Missouri Flooding
Our efforts at controlling river systems have created some of the problems being experienced today on the Missouri and Mississippi river systems.
The record flooding on the Missouri River systems is in part a reflection of human intervention on our river systems as we have tried to tame our wild rivers. As shown by this flooding, our efforts can seem pretty feeble. Watch this DZTV program Preventing Flood Damage where my guest Bob Freitag specifically uses the grand dame of all our nation's rivers, the Mississippi River, as an example of how our presumed good efforts have fizzled over the years and actually enabled more flood damages.
