(TNS) — Gov. Jim Pillen issued a proclamation Monday to put the Nebraska National Guard on active-duty status for wildfire response as high winds, low humidity and dry conditions remain a concern.

Only aviation assets, support equipment and personnel have been placed on active-duty status under the scope of Pillen's order, according to a statement from his office.

"Protecting the citizens of Nebraska is my number one priority," Pillen said. “We are ensuring that resources are ready to combat fires and safeguard lives and property. I have full confidence in Adjutant General Strong to lead our state’s disaster response with efficiency and effectiveness."

In mid-March, Pillen mobilized the Nebraska National Guard to assist with multiple wildfires in central and western parts of the state, working in conjunction with local firefighters and volunteers to control and contain the fires.

Over 827,000 acres in total burned in the March wildfires in central and western parts of Nebraska, according to the Nebraska State Climate Office. The Morrill Fire alone accounted for over 642,000 acres burned, making it the state's largest-ever wildfire.

The proclamation comes after Pillen asked Federal Emergency Management Agency offices for a 30-day extension to submit information to FEMA to ensure they have time to fully assess the damage caused by the March fires. If the extension is approved, Nebraska officials would have until May 27 to submit their disaster application.
