Joe Allbaugh Goes to Prisons

Former FEMA director now running a prison system.

If you are going to have a resume and it starts with "Longtime political operative," you can see why Joe Allbaugh is now running a prison system instead of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). See this article: A longtime Republican political operative who previously headed the Federal Emergency Management Agency has the daunting task of leading Oklahoma's overcrowded and underfunded prison system.

Back in the day, I called Joe Allbaugh a political hack who was handed the FEMA director's job as sop for George W. Bush winning the presidential election. Allbaugh had been in the Texas governor's administration and part of his campaign team for winning the election. His qualifications for being FEMA director were minimal, especially when compared to the interest and expertise that James Lee Witt had brought to the position. He is also the guy who killed Project Impact, calling it only a marketing program.

After leaving the administration and handing the reins of FEMA to Michael Brown, he became active in funneling huge civilian contracts to those doing business supporting the United States efforts in Iraq. I believe it is called "cashing in."

That money must have run out if he is interested in running a prison system. At least this is a job for which he might have more qualifications.

In case you are wondering -- he was not my favorite person!

Eric Holdeman is a contributing writer for Emergency Management magazine and is the former director of the King County, Wash., Office of Emergency Management.
