New Deputy Administrator for FEMA

There's a hearing coming up this week on confirming the new FEMA deputy administrator.

If you remember that most political appointees only last about 18 months in Washington, D.C., then it is about time we have a new deputy administrator at FEMA.

See: "The U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Chairman Tom Carper (D-Del.) and Ranking Member Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) will hold a public hearing to consider the nomination of Joseph L. Nimmich to be deputy administrator, Federal Emergency Management Agency, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Thursday, July 24, 2014 at 3:45 p.m. in room 342 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C."

He will be replacing Rich Serino who held the position for the first part of the Obama administration.

Joe Nimmich is another retired Coast Guard admiral who will hold that position.

Eric Holdeman is a contributing writer for Emergency Management magazine and is the former director of the King County, Wash., Office of Emergency Management.
