New York Times Op-ed on Oso Mudslide

The size and scope of this disaster have made it a national level event.

Back 10-20 years ago we could tell when our disasters where making national news by the fact that the local CBS News Radio Station (710 KIRO) would be carrying stories about the disaster.

With the magnification and splintering of the media landscape today there are many more media outlets and the 24/7 nature of the news makes it a daunting task to keep up with everything being written or covered about a single event.

The New York Times Op-ed on the Oso mudslide A Mudslide, Foretoldhighlights some of the facts from the event and then some personal experiences by the writer. The one part I’ll definitely agree with him on is the altering of the landscape and the ensuing dangers that come from our human impacts on nature.

I expect to have my own op-ed in Crosscut tomorrow, which I’ll share here when I see it online. The topic there will be about how people appear to be very comfortable in living with risks that will one day be catastrophic to them and their property.

Bill Cumming shared the NY Times op-ed.
