NFIP Flood Insurance Claims Handbook

This is your playbook for how to submit a claim.

Flooding is our most common hazard here in the United States. It can happen just about everywhere from Alaska to Florida, from the desert to the mountains. In the news recently is the unfortunate flooding on the Mississippi River system. Missouri has been hard hit of late, but the waters are flowing south and more flooding can be expected downriver.

Many hundreds, if not thousands, of homes and businesses have been impacted by this flooding. While there are federal government programs to help with flooding and general disaster relief, there is a process to apply for any benefits that might be available. The guide that can help you in this process is the NFIP Flood Insurance Claims Handbook. To access these benefits you will have to already have had flood insurance on the property that was damaged.

The one recommendation I have for homeowners is to consider any property buy-out programs that might be in place in your jurisdiction. The goal of these flood mitigation programs is to remove properties from the flood-way that have had repeated flood events. As I look to the future, I can see how this El Nino year of severe weather might be repeated more frequently as the planet continues to become warmer. These warmer temperatures provide for more severe weather like the storms, tornadoes and resultant flooding we've seen so far in the last two months.

Personally I would not like to go through repeated flood events like we've seen damage homes and businesses in recent weeks.
