Podcast: ‘The Little Wiggles of Hurricane Season - Interview with National Weather Service Director’

The wiggles are what was new to me.

Yes, I’m a podcaster, but I also listen to other podcasts. Today I caught this one, “The Little Wiggles of Hurricane Season - Interview with National Weather Service Director, Ken Graham,” from Disaster Tough.

The interview was with Ken Graham, director of the National Weather Service. What I learned was his point about forecasting storm tracks and how there can be “little wiggles” on the path of a storm. Therefore, one should not look at a storm track and say, “Hey I’m just outside of the storm track, so I’m OK and I don’t need to do anything to prepare or pay attention anymore.” These wiggles could be 20-30 miles difference or more.

Remember this for your personal use and also when issuing warnings based on storm tracks.

The other thing that he highlighted was the lack of use of social media by emergency managers. This is something I’ve been harping on for years. In fact, one recent episode of my Disaster Zone podcast, “Use of Social Media in Disasters,” highlights multiple studies on this very topic.
Eric Holdeman is a contributing writer for Emergency Management magazine and is the former director of the King County, Wash., Office of Emergency Management.
