The other thing to note about the quote is that doing the above is not about manipulating people. I define the difference between manipulation and leadership as the intent of the leader. If it is not "all about" them and how to advance their career, then it is leadership. Besides tapping into the resources of many people I also enjoy helping others either by connecting them with someone they need to meet or providing a bit of information. I encourage you to do the same--what you put out comes back to you tenfold.
Quote: Leadership, Relationships, Manipulation
Leadership is about relationships and it isn't about manipulation.
"All relationships require hard work, patience, understanding, and, yes, tactics and strategies designed to make them blossom. But don't confuse that with manipulation. We can have tactics and strategies for building relationships, just as we have tactics and strategies for marketing, selling, advertising, production, distribution, and customer service." Tommy Spaulding For me this quote calls to mind the importance of relationships and how you manage them. Personal contacts are something I've always tried to enhance. I just returned from a conference where I picked up 25 business cards. Saturday morning I scanned them with a card reader, added notations about the conversations I had with them, if they presented at a session and any personal information if it was shared. On the plane ride home I wrote out 25 handwritten note cards to send to the people. My workplace doesn't provide personalize cards so I spent $650 of my own money to have some made--because relationships are important to me. You never know when I may need a contact with General Dynamics or a senior project manager with the Government Accountability Office (GAO).
