I’m not talking about solving the world peace or hunger in the world. Those are “hard,” but you know there are people and organizations who are tackling the problem. If no one did anything, nothing would ever get done.
Personally I like doing things that people say cannot be accomplished. Any number of individuals advised me not to try to run against a 16 year incumbent for the Port of Tacoma Commission. The easy path would have been to be spending my Spring, Summer and Fall doing something pleasurable. But, I think I have something to contribute to the Port, the Commission and the voters of Pierce County that is not offered by the incumbent.
Back when I was a runner there were those who would never choose to run up a hill. Too hard—I liked it for the endurance it gave me. When I ran cross country in high school, it was on the hills that you wanted to pass someone and “bury them with your speed” to demoralize them when they were tired.
I have found in my experience that those individuals who are not afraid of failure are the ones who win races when no one expected them to do so. Perhaps I won’t win this race, but it will not be for a lack of work or trying. No one has ever called Eric Holdeman lazy!
