Quote: Recognizing Ability

Leaders need the skill of selecting the right people for their team.

“There is something rarer than ability.  It is the ability to recognize ability.”  Elbert Hubbard  We all aspire to be better workers and leaders.  This involves being life-long learners and hopefully making mistakes because we are trying out new ideas, then learning from the mistakes and applying that learning to our future actions.

The quote above takes that learning to another level, the ability to spot and acquire talent to add to our organizations.  When I meet people I’m always sizing them up as to their credibility and what they are saying and what they have to offer.  I can be, and have been fooled by the person who presents themselves in a positive manner, are articulate and pleasant to interact with.  Sometimes you have go “beyond the cover of the book” to find out what is inside, which is what counts.  Professional sports recruitment is littered with the stars that shoulda, coulda been major players.  Brian Bosworth is one that sticks in my mind as being a huge bust when he finally made it to the NFL.  We need to concentrate on hiring the right people and not making Boz like mistakes.

As I noted in my last Eric’s Corner Hiring the Right Way it is our ability as leaders and as supervisors to hire the right people, and is what counts and will make the difference in the organizations we lead.
