Crying Is Not a Sign of Weakness

On the contrary, it is a sign of our human nature and caring.

Earlier today we had several briefings on the Oso, Wash., mudslide. You will be seeing more details about the slide on this blog in the days to come.

One of the presenters in talking about mental health and stress in an EOC had this quote on a slide. Isn’t it true that we fight back tears when sometimes we should just them flow and not be afraid of showing our emotions?

In my family I’m the one who cries at the movies. I guess I’m the sensitive one in the household. Tears symbolize the connection to what just happened. Maybe if our citizens saw us crying they would come to understand that government employees do care about the people they serve.

There are media people who seem to hold it together no matter what, but even they are impacted by events. I recall the aftermath of 9/11 and several prominent newscasters and entertainment professionals losing it when they were on television. It showed that they too are human after all.
