Quote: On Sharing Information in the Emergency Operations Center

Remember why you are there and what you are supposed to be doing.

“I know something. Who else needs to know what I know? Have I shared what I know with them?” Sign on the Wall of the King County ECC

I was out at the King County, Washington State Emergency Coordination Center (ECC) for a recovery planning meeting last week and noticed a big, banner like, sign hanging on the wall. It had the words above on it.

This is a great message for anyone coming to work in the ECC. The reason you are there is to share information and coordinate your activities. Everyone has a piece of the puzzle, and it takes all the players in the room to provide their bits of information to paint the picture of what is going on and how best to respond to an event.

When you think about how ECC or EOC is arranged and the processes that are put in place, they are all about sharing information. You have briefings, situation reports, maps, charts, status boards, all of which are meant to share information with others. Don’t hoard information, share it!
