Quote: Silos of Excellence

How many silos can you name?

“Silos of excellence.” RS

Recently I was at a Department of Homeland Security meeting and ran into “RS,” who didn’t want to be identified as the source for this quote.

We were talking about the proliferation of national pilots, not to mention the university and national lab programs, that have “Centers of Excellence” identified on a variety of topics.

She pointed out how these are many times just “silos of excellence,” where the different organizations take the money, produce a variety of products and then close the books, waiting for the next infusion of funding. There is little cross pollination of ideas or sharing of findings beyond a limited few.

This then is an issue we need to try to address in the future. As one earlier quote said, “We need to bend the stovepipes to achieve more coordination.”
